Funny how these things play out. Right after Chris Brown’s alleged beatdown of Rihanna, the “Umbrella” girl was riding a huge wave of public sympathy, while Chris Brown’s career was on life support. It looked as if his hopes of winning a Grammy were over, unless the Grammy people created a special category for Outstanding Achievement as a Violent Asshole. These days Chris isn’t looking any better, but Rihanna is squandering much of that sympathy by acting like the archetypal enabling victim who won’t let a little thing like a trip to the emergency room come between her and her man. And now the two are drifting into Ike and Tina Turner territory, with reports that they’ve headed into the studio to record a duet. A love song, natch.
Producer Polow da Don convinced the fun couple to record the duet, which tells you all you need to know about this guy’s refined sense of taste. TMZ’s anonymous source on this story reports that the sessions were “very emotional” and that “the feeling in the room was pure love.” Pure love, and the stench of two careers going up in smoke. No word on the duet’s specific genre—reggae, R&B, whatever—but it sounds like it’s got a secure place in the specialized niche of music to lose your lunch by.

Of course, it’s already well-known that Brown lived in a home where his mother was physically and mentally abused but this wreaks of something more. Any gal who’s ever witnessed their mother stand up for themselves and refuse to take a beat-down would not stand for this shit. My suspicion is that Rihanna has witnessed a few good momma-tosses in her own short lifetime.
The only thing that varies from the Rihanna-Brown fiasco and your run-of-the-mill textbook case is the fact that it’s being played out in public.
I highly doubt that any young woman who is not already predisposed to living the life of a battered woman will suddenly become more so because of the ‘role model’ Rihanna has become. But, we may very well see one of the two die a very public death before this is all played out: she at his hand, or he at the hands of one of her defenders.
Women can…and do…escape, but it’s not easy regardless of whether financial independence is a concern or not. In her case, it might well be the public shame of being a perpetual victim that opens her eyes.
Or, one can hope.
Even then, it will take years of coming to grips and actively affirming herself each and every day to keep from repeating the mistakes she’s making today.
That is…if she manages to survive the mistakes that she makes today.
On a totally unrelated topic. It’s hard to focus on commenting at the moment.
Is it just me, or is Karl Malone really hot?
Cmon. She’s a gazillionaire. Ditch the loser.
A love song, natch.
Lemme guess, the working title is If you leave me, I’ll fucking kill you, bitch!?
Cmon. She’s a gazillionaire. Ditch the loser.
You’re not suggesting she cover Ray Charles, are you?
Hit the road, Jack and don’t you come back no more, no more, no more, no more

“alleged beatdown of Rihanna’
Puleeze, let’s dispense with the political correct bullshit of “alleged”
The mofo bitched slapped her into next week and she is going back (and will get more of the same) because she thinks she can change him. BWAH WAH WAH WAH
I liked her, she is stunning and I like her music but I lost respect for her now. As for the asshole, he is disgusting as a cochroach in your lunch.
the minute she returned to the woman beater i lost all interest in her. i don’t want to read, listen or hear about her cause she is beneath all the ordinary women like me who manage their self esteem and their much more difficult lives much better than her. she’s someone we all pity. i d rather look up to someone else than can give me some much needed inspiration in my every day life and can really look up to and identify with.
