Adverts That Work #103: Worse Than That, Actually

By Bedhead in Adverts, Smoking Bolts, Trent Reznor

Jamie Oliver Advert

Let’s suppose that, during one ephemeral moment, you were actually bored enough to ask yourself, “Could there be anything in the pop culture universe whose inexplicable ubiquity is greater than that of the fucking Village People?” Try Jamie “Naked Chef” Oliver dressed up as all five of the Village People. Oliver pulled this bizarre stunt to promote his latest book, Jamie’s America (Penguin, 2009). Isn’t it charming that Oliver tries to appeal to Yanks through our very own late-1970s shame? What a wanker.

In all seriousness, this advert is mildly amusing and, at the very least, worthy of a quintuple take. It’s just that I’m still rather irritated that the so-called Naked Chef isn’t anyone that I’d like to see naked. Besides, Nine Inch Nails’ post-ironic take on the Village People really can’t be beat:

Not to be picky, but there wasn’t a sailor in the Village People. It was a G.I. Cute pic, though!
