Alec Baldwin might be a little hazy about the big issues of the day, but give the guy credit: he saw the “rude, thoughtless pig” threat and put it under the national spotlight. Now, as the Senate considers a bloated farm bill, he’s asking Hillary Clinton to keep the issue on her agenda now and during the impending presidential campaign:

As a parent, I see first-hand the challenges of keeping children focused on healthful foods…. I hope you will take a long hard look at programs that push children ‘ s nutrition in the wrong direction, and take strong steps to reform these outdated policies. There has never been a more urgent time to take action on nutrition and health.

Let’s hope the Senate is able to ban fatty snack foods from school cafeterias, because if they don’t, I’m not sure Alec will be able to restrain his rage. And surely little Ireland has suffered enough.

Oddly, one of Baldwin’s other pet peeves causes is the Florida manatee, which is in real danger from the hordes of drunken motorboaters and jet-skiers that infest Florida. Of course, slimmer manatees would present a smaller target, and they’d probably be able to swim a bit faster as well. Perhaps if Alec went down to the Everglades and spent a few weeks haranguing the manatees Glengarry Glen Ross-style, he could whip these flabby aquatic butterballs into shape and give the rest of us a much needed break.
