After four years since Sin City’s success paved the way for a sequel, Sin City 2 is still stuck in relative production hell. As far the imdb page for Sin City 2 is concerned, the script has been finished, but Rose McGowan is still listed as the “rumoured” actress to play Ava Lord. While the imdb page hasn’t been updated since January 12, that’s still not good news, folks. While I will always find Rose to be cute and, yeah, somewhat talented in certain capacities, she is no longer (if she ever has been) leading lady material. Furthermore, anyone who is actually familiar with Frank Miller’s “A Dame To Kill For,” which is the basis for Sin City 2, Rose is no Ava Lord. The character of Ava must be played by an enigmatic and deathly beautiful actress, who is capable of manipulating the likes of Clive Owen (as Dwight McCarthy) and Michael Clarke Duncan (as Manute), as well as a detective character that isn’t yet listed on imdb. Rose McGowan doesn’t have the stature (literally or figuratively) to even come close to pulling off this sort of thing.

Now, Angelina Jolie could easily slip into (or out of) Ava Lord’s threads, and Jolie also has much more commercial appeal than Rose, whose only major selling point is that she’s engaged to director Robert Rodriguez, who has (somehow) seemingly cemented her into the Red Sonja role. However, that Barbarella remake seems to have either fallen out of negotiations or gone to another actress, so who the hell knows. Whatever the case, the casting decisions made by the dick of Robert Rodriguez may no longer hold liquid of any sort. Word on the street is that Angelina Jolie’s name has been reintroduced into “serious talks” for the role of Ava Lord:

Jolie first spoke to Rodriguez and writer/co-director Frank Miller about the film in 2006. All went quiet on the project though, largely because the producers weren’t ready to pull the trigger on the production, and all converse ceased. Now, according to my mole, the project has gathered steam and the filmmakers are trying to get Jolie to officially commit to playing the female lead.

Hopefully, the Weinstein Company can pull Jolie into Sin City 2, for she is damn perfect for the role of Ava. Hell, the Weinsteins got Brad Pitt for Inglourious Basterds, so there’s gotta be some positive mojo at work. Good times, mates.
