Even before David Beckham travelled to Toronto to merely sit out his fourth game for LA Galaxy, the negative vibes were flowing, and Galaxy fans were certainly making their disappointment clear about the injury keeping David Beckham off the pitch.
Honestly, what the hell do these people expect - for this guy to heal the San Andreas fault with his bare hands? Don’t blame Becks for this mess - blame the L.A. Galaxy for hiring him largely for his celebrity . . .
Despite the fact that Beckham skipped a Real Madrid game (on a £100,000 per week salary) to attend Tom Cruise’s weddingpalooza. (See Update Below)
Despite Beckham’s record of discipline problems on the pitch:
- In England, Becks was the first player to amass 2 red cards and the first English captain to be kicked off the field.
- For Real Madrid, Becks earned a total of 41 yellow cards and 4 red cards.
Despite Beckham’s constant injuries that have put him on the bench:
- 2002 World Cup: Broken foot and eight weeks on the bench.
- 2004 Real Madrid Season: Bruised ribs and more missed games.
- 2006 World Cup: Current ankle injury (from June 6) and source of missed games for LA Galaxy. Beckham is receiving daily deep tissue massages.

As far as Beckham’s rumoured $250 million salary, that actually isn’t the case. That numeric figure was put out by the L.A. Galaxy management to create buzz and sell season tickets to all the idiots, and to that effect, the plan has worked:
Beckham’s impact has been immediate. More than 250,000 of his No. 23 Galaxy jerseys had been sold at $80 apiece as of last month, according to the team. Tickets to Galaxy road games were selling so fast that teams such as Washington’s DC United and Toronto FC started requiring fans to purchase from five-game to half-season packages that include the Galaxy game.
Galaxy Assistant Manager Tom Payne says the team has earned an additional $13.3 million, more than twice Beckham’s $5.5 annual salary, from ticket price increases and new sponsorships this season.
Meanwhile, Tom Payne is hopefully regretting the fact that he agreed to backload the Galaxy’s schedule this season in anticipation of Beckham’s arrival. In fact, the team currently faces “the most hectic schedule of any MLS team.” This will surely backfire at some point, but until then, disgruntled fans can go shell out more cash for a Bored Of The Beckhams tee shirt.
UPDATE: A frustrated dickless wonder commentor decided to call me “a liar, a hack and a poor writer to boot” for insinuating that David Beckham attended the Cruise wedding weekend. I do not dispute the latter of these insults, but as to the two former assertions, you’re absolutely wrong. While it is true that Beckham was told he couldn’t attend the wedding, he still flew to Madrid. At least, according to the liars and hacks at People Magazine:
However, to defame and insult Becks was not the point of this post, but some people cannot bear to look at the larger picture. It’s the LA Galaxy management who to blame for the current situation.

Interesting.
I was at Dick’s last week and there was an entire rack of Beckham jerseys not selling. (My husband had no clue who the LA Galaxy was or why Beckham was such a big deal.)
Oh well. We were in Pittsburgh, after all. The Steelers and Penn State stuff sells so much better.
