Clive Owen and the Numb, Undecipherable Stare

England seems to breed a certain type of irresistable hotness in its actors. If one cannot stand Hugh Grant, then Daniel Craig will satisfy, but for the ultimate, Clive Owen will do quite nicely. Fortunately, Clive himself appears in the September issue of GQ magazine:

[H]e’s a lot better looking than you are, and yes, every woman you know wants to bed him, but you don’t begrudge him these things, because (a) he’s not pretty and (b) he’s not callow. Simple as that. It’s a vintage kind of maleness, Clive Owen’s, akin to McQueen’s and Eastwood’s and Newman’s. Never showy or needy. Sure of itself without being cocky. Totally in control of what it will and won’t give. The kind of maleness guys hope to see not only in their friends but also in their fathers.

While Clive Owen isn’t considered to be a character actor in the purist sense, he does seem to gravitate towards roles with a protocol of vengeance. Perhaps the most knee-buckling example of Owen’s brand of maleness is as Dwight in Sin City:

Dwight: I’m Shellie’s new boyfriend, and I’m out of my mind. If you so much as talk to her or even think her name, I’ll cut you in ways that’ll make you useless to a woman.

Jack Rafferty: You’re making a big mistake, man. A *big* mistake.

Dwight: No. You’re the one who already made the mistake…you didn’t flush. [Shoves Jack's head down toilet.]

Hot damn. Aside from shoving Benecio Del Toro’s head into a toilet, Clive Owen often captivates in the most subtle of manners. In fact, it’s almost what he doesn’t do that catches our attention.

I don’t know — there’s something about his lumpy face that reminds me of mashed potatoes.

Then again, I really like mashed potatoes.
