Just one more weekend in the (semi)official summer movie cycle, and it’s already clear that 2009 was the biggest summer ever at the box office–$4.18 billion in North America alone. Of course, quantity and quality aren’t necessarily related. Moviefone conducted an online poll yesterday, and found that what moviegoers liked and how they spent their money are two very different things.
Thirty-five percent named The Hangover as the film most worth their money, which put the comedy at the top of the list and shows that people haven’t completely lost their damn minds. At the other end of the scale, Year One topped (or bottomed) the list of complete wastes of time and money, which suggests the general public now feels much the same about Jack Black as I felt twenty minutes into High Fidelity. Some of the poll’s most interesting results were generated by that insanely lucrative crapfest Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. The movie made nearly a billion dollars worldwide, give or take a gazillion, but only 16 percent of viewers thought it was most worth their cash, while 17 percent thought it wasn’t worth the price of admission. At the same time, Megan Fox was picked as summer’s sexiest babe by an overwhelming 55 percent, followed by Sandra Bullock at 10 percent and Sienna Miller at 9 percent. (Probably good news for Sandra and bad news for Sienna.) In other words, Paramount could have done just as well by leaving out the lasers, the explosions, the autobots, and the swinging steel testicles and just letting Megan Fox wander around in skimpy outfits for a couple of hours. For that matter, they could have saved a ton of money by leaving Michael Bay out of the mix. With any luck, some of the studio suits will figure this out before Transformers 3 is unleashed.
