Quick: Name three things David Lynch and Gwyneth Paltrow have in common. Okay… Well, they’re both three-dimensional objects and carbon-based life forms, but after that they diverge rather sharply. But Lynch, like Goop, is turning away from movies to focus on his musical career. Lynch’s new website, which he describes as “a secret room filled with music” (and which Earthlings would describe as an online music store) opens today. It turns out that Lynch has had a longer, more intimate involvement with music than a Philistine like myself might have expected. He co-wrote the song “In Heaven” for Eraserhead (a factoid very nearly as disturbing as making Eraserhead in the first place), and also wrote the Grammy-winning theme song for Twin Peaks.
Lynch started using davidlynch.com nearly a decade ago as a creative outlet for all sorts of weirdness, including weather reports for the LA Basin personally delivered by Mr. Lynch. But maintaining the website proved too time-consuming, and eventually he abandoned it completely. The new and improved site focuses more specifically on Lynch’s original music. As far as movies go (the man hasn’t made one since Inland Empire in 2006), Lynch seems to have put them on hiatus. “Fans might start looking,” he said, “but they will need a strong telescope to see it coming.”
