The anonymous speaker of the above quote undoubtedly sought to avoid the rage of designers who would rather sell their overpriced wares at any cost. Even more accurate is Oscar Wilde’s perspective:
“Fashion is a form of ugliness so intolerable that we have to alter it every six months.”
Even Marlene Dietrich tried to distance herself from the superficial:
“I dress for the image. Not for myself, not for the public, not for fashion, not for men.”
Whether Marlene succeeded is up to one’s interpretaion, but that’s another topic for another day.
What is particularly amusing about fashion is when designers claim to be artists painting upon their canvas. Whether that canvas is a runway, a glossy magazine, or just a coked-up model, fashion designers have always sought to justify their trade on a higher plane than mere commerce:
“The printed page has determined the way fashion looks since women’s magazines were first introduced. For over three centuries garments have appeared as if frozen still. Nick Knight’s key motivation for founding SHOWstudio was to investigate the representation of clothing through sound and motion.”
In light of this lofty language and if fashion really is art, then what in the hell is this?
