And for the first time in years, the Grammy awards show this weekend might be worth watching. Coldplay is nominated in seven different categories, which really tells you everything you need to know about the cutting-edge relevance of the Grammys. More interesting is the band’s ongoing dispute with guitarist Joe Satrianai, who claimsGwyneth Paltrow’s boy toy Chris Martin ripped off his 2004 song “If I Could Fly” for the chorus of their current hit “Viva La Vida.” (You can judge for yourself here.) Satriani filed a copyright infringement lawsuit back in December, but so far the band has refused to discuss the matter or come to a settlement. So Satriani’s lawyer has decided the Grammys would be the perfect venue for serving the group with legal papers in a setting where they couldn’t possibly get away:
We have warned their British lawyers that we have hired a fleet of process servers lined up to dog the band everywhere they go this weekend in the hopes of serving them.”
Besides a fleet of process servers, attorney Howard King has also hired camera crews to immortalize the event on video. It might even be captured live, since Coldplay will be performing “Viva La Vida” at the Grammys. Certainly, it would be sweet, sweet schadenfreude to see a band get served for copyright infringement after building their career on tunes that always remind you that someone else did this earlier and better. But things could be worse for Chris and the lads. After all, they might win yet another Grammy. Usually, those little trophies are just career suicide.
