It’s quite perplexing how Gerard Butler–whether he’s playing an Irishman, an Aussie, or an American–always manages to keep his Scottish burr in full effect onscreen. Regardless of why film directors allow this sort of slackage, it’s pretty clear why Butler can’t concentrate on the finer details of his performance… because the man is completely preoccupied with asses and, specifically, his own ass. This obsession also makes Butler’s film promotion awfully interesting, whether he’s shoving donuts up his bum and taking a polaroid as well as acknowledging that “there was a little too much ass” during the production of Gamer or when he’s bragging about how Madonna arrived on the set of Guy Ritchie’s RockandRolla just to give the flu-stricken actorB-12 shot in the butt. (Nevermind that Madge did same thing for Justin Timberlake’s “top shelf” ass.) And with Butler’s latest press rounds, his ubiquitous ass is still very much a topic of discussion:
“I love to show my rear end in roles. I fear it’s becoming a bit of a habit, a tradition that I have to show my ass in every movie that I can.”
Butler bares all in new film Law Abiding Citizen and admits that scene was very much in keeping with his character in the film.
He adds, “This was always a great scene in the movie and actually speaks volumes about this character and part of the wackiness and unexpectedness that happens… He’s completely unpredictable and so when he strips off it makes sense. I mean there’s a genius behind that and if it means I have to bare my ass again than so be it. I’ve always had a skinny, tight ass but I had to bulk up for this film; I was inspired by watching (Robert) De Niro in Taxi Driver during the scene where he’s doing the push-ups and he’s so cut. A lot more is said in that than somebody just being big and kind of a meathead.”
Law Abiding Citizen comes out in theaters this Friday and features Butler completely naked (from the rear, natch) as he kneels down in surrender towards arresting police. I’m gonna save this moment for the privacy of my own home:
