When listening to Henry Rollins speak, it’s always amazing what tales he has gathered from his discussions with others. The man is very adept at disarming any person he meets and extracting information from just about any conversation. So, even though we usually avoid speaking of Britney Spears (one of the members of the unholy trinity), this comes from Rollins, who found out how all of her crappy songs are voiced:

“They have the black chick come in and sing, and Britney sings over it, and they mix them together,” said Rollins,who has his own talk show on IFC.

“(Britney) gets her phrasing basically from this older R&B woman. I found that out talking to an engineer.

“Britney apparently isn’t actually the worst singer, she just has no feel. So they bring in this older black woman who sings the song, then Britney sings to it, and they kind of make a mix of the two voices, and that’s what you hear on the records.”

Of course, Henry Rollins knows his own faults and isn’t afraid to admit them. During a recent spoken-word gig in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Rollins readily admitted (according to my own copious notes) that he “just can’t really sing for shit,” which is why he’s always been a screamer. In addition, my dubious powers convinced him to admit that he also drives a Suburu Outback. To my dismay, I was then informed by a nameless third party that Rollins’ method of transport is, like, totally uncool by Hollywood standards. Who knew?
