The decade of the Oughties is finally coming to an end–maybe, depending on how you figure it. (And let’s not get all pedantic; this decade can’t end soon enough for my tastes.) At any rate, what better time to get a perspective on the events of the past ten years? And who better to give that perspective than a group of people for whom those years are their entire lives? Alison Louie-Garcia asked a group of 9-year-olds in Orange County a few questions about the decade. You’ll want to be sitting when you watch this video, and afterward you might want to have one of those aluminum walkers handy so you can stand back up. Among other things, we learn:
- These kids have never heard of Napster.
- They’ve never heard the sound of a dial-up modem.
- They’ve never heard “Baby One More Time.” (Although when they were told who sang it, one kid said, “Isn’t that the girl who cut her hair bald?”)
We also learn that they’re globally aware, in a vague sort of way. One kid defined going green as “the four R’s: Re-use, and… I forget the other two.” Not only that, but we learn about their fears, which are even more vague and confused. As one kid put it: “I’m afraid of the Devil, and Bigfoot. But mostly Bigfoot.” Aah, what can you expect? After all, these little punks are only nine years old.
