Bilbo is 50 when he is enlisted as a burglar in Thorin’s party; this would be early middle age for a Hobbit. The critical thing for me is he needs to be a convincing English country squire. Ian Holm was perfect casting for Peter Jackson’s adaptation. Ideally a younger man along the same lines will be cast for The Hobbit. I would be happy with someone like David Tennant.
Agreed, Ian Holm was an excellent choice (I’m not so sure about Elijah Wood), and Tennant would be perfectly acceptable. But I’m surprised at the number of outlets that are uncritically passing on this “Tom Waits as Bilbo” rumor. That’s just not plausible.
But if it is David Tennant, I’d eventually expect him to find a big, blue police box…
