Leave it to pompous douchebag director James Cameron to deliver a backhanded compliment that truly functions as an insult towards one of his many ex-wives, Kathryn Bigelow, director of The Hurt Locker. You see, Cameron thinks that Bigelow should receive the Best Director Oscar… not because she may or may not deserve the honour but because his shelves are already cluttered up with such trifles. Oh, but he still thinks that Best Picture should go to Avatar:

That’s the best possible outcome… because I know how hard my team worked and how much they would — how proud they would be of that accolade, you know what I mean? And look, for myself, I have already got an Oscar. I’ve got a couple of them, you know. And I respect the whole institution of the Academy Awards because it’s the pinnacle of achievement in my chosen profession. But I don’t really need another one. But to be honored – you know, to have the team honored and for their accomplishment, that would mean so much to them. And I think that would be the fantasy outcome in all of this.

How magnanimous. How selfless for Cameron to preemptively give up that Best Director honour with a figurative, “Congratulations, babe. But, you know, it’s really my award… I’m just letting you borrow it.” It almost makes one long for more bitter, mean-spirited comments from Linda Hamilton. Incidentally, Cameron certainly has “a type,” doesn’t he?
