The difference that Anonymous is making is that, just a year ago, Scientology would have been moving to utterly destroy Beghe’s career in return for his coming out and saying “it’s a scam.” This is how they tried to ruin the lives of Paulette Cooper (Google: operation freakout) and many others. But now, since they are being attacked from hundreds of different directions by an organization they never counted on and have no way to counter, are losing membership, and will probably soon be facing racketeering charges, personal and class-action lawsuits, and (we hear) one more major defection soon, their policies of harassment and intimidation of people merely stating a contrary opinion is faltering.

There are defections even amongst the special unit set aside to handle bad PR by any means necessary, the Office of Special Affairs (OSA). Last month an internal document was leaked saying that “OSA can’t take too many more months of Anonymous.”
