Joaquin Phoenix has had one of the more interesting acting careers out there, and now it looks like he’s going to do an equally interesting job of losing his damn mind. The talented weirdo announced last October that he was giving up his acclaimed acting career to concentrate on his work as a rapper, which has gotten hardly any acclaim. The public got its first look at Joaquin’s rappin’ skillz at Lavo in Las Vegas last week, and it ain’t pretty. Joaquin stumbles around mumbling incoherently for about a minute and a half before he falls right off the stage. Even worse, Gatecrasher is reporting that Joaquin’s pants had “such a massive hole in the crotch, it was hard for anyone to focus on his singing.” This may have been a shrewd tactical move. Joaquin’s brother-in-law Casey Affleck is filming this whole trainwreck of a career move for a documentary due out next year, which will either be the best thing since This Is Spinal Tap or a tragic record of a human being’s complete disintegration. Some are saying this has to be an act:

Joaquin Phoenix’s new rap character is the Bermuda Triangle between Borat, Tony Clifton, and Charles Manson. Or maybe Zach Galifianakis. There’s too many to choose from and that’s why Phoenix’s ‘I’m quitting acting to play music’ story is itself, undoubtedly, an act.”

Maybe. Keeping in mind that this is the guy who forgot how to spell his own name during the writers’ strike last year, the prognosis isn’t good. Joaquin really should have stuck to playing country-and-western songs.
