O, the Unspeakable Horror!

By Agent Bedhead in Film, Johnny Depp, Tom Cruise

Tom Cruise as Edward ScissorhandsJohnny Depp as Edward Scissorhands

Johnny Depp has revealed that he almost didn’t land the title role in Tim Burton’s Edward Scissorhands. This role, of course, was what launched Depp onto the Hollywood radar and ultimately resulted in what is now known as the “Wino Forever” tattoo. All of this almost didn’t happen:

[Depp] says, “They (movie bosses) were interested in me for the part, but had someone else in mind too. A few days later, they called me to say the studio preferred the other actor. (It was) Tom Cruise. I was really disappointed. From the moment I read the script, I knew I had to be in it. But I understood that the studio wanted a box office superstar.

“Then a miracle happened. My agent called to say they wanted me instead.”

A miracle, indeed. Cruise may be steeped in craziness, but that doesn’t necessarily translate into the requisite edginess required for a Tim Burton film. However, I cannot speak of this any more, for the unthinkable ramifications of Johnny Depp remaining an unknown actor are far too disturbing. By the power of Photoshop, all is cleansed!

I think you enjoyed making that Photoshop a little too much.

I don’t think it’s his lack of edginess that would have ruined a terrific character, it is his lack of sensitivity and, most of all, his lack of subtlety.

As is so often the case when I hear the stories of these near-misses, I shiver at the films that never would have been…or worse, might have been but for the lousy casting.

(Molly Ringwold in Ghost, anyone?)

In such an alternative universe, ‘edward’ would have been almost entirely unknown, placed next to Ishtar to compete for it’s dubious title.

“it is his lack of sensitivity”

I disagree, Tom can display more emotions than Johnny.
Tom doesn’t nned tons of make up, fake hair, fake gold teeth, big glasses, costumes etc to be able to show emotions.
Depp needs that (Charlie and the chocolate factory, PiratesI,II,III, Sweeney Todd, Ed Wood, Las vegas Parano, etc)
The ruse of disguise, I don’t fall for this.
I prefer Tom. See Eyes Wide Shut, Born on the fourth of July, Magnolia)
