Several decades back when I was slightly younger, Michael Stipe and R.E.M. wrote some catchy, even superior songs (and no, “Shiny Happy People” was not one of those superior songs). All the same, Stipe somehow gave the impression that in real life he just might be sort of a pretentious dickwad, and now he’s proved it by forging an alliance with the Queen of the Dickwads. Yes, Michael Stipe is now officially the first guest editor at GOOP. Gwyneth Paltrow referred to Stipe as her “dear friend” as she welcomed him to the blog in her inimitably gushy manner:
Aside from being the frontman in one of the most innovative and brilliant bands of all time, R.E.M., Michael is an obsessed foodie like the rest of us here at Goop…. Michael recently spent a good chunk of time in the Big Easy recording the band’s next album, and true to form, discovered his favorite culinary gems, which he has so graciously shared with us.”
Michael follows with a quick review of several of his favorite New Orleans eateries, along with various other spots in the city. To be honest, the reviews could have been better. Information about the food is a bit skimpy, and he does a noticeable amount of name-dropping. Also, compared to his songs there’s a real dearth of lyrical, surrealistic imagery. And when he types, Michael hardly mumbles at all.
