Despite the overratedness of American Beauty, it certainly brought Mena Suvari into the spotlight as a gorgeous, sexy, if slightly offbeat babe. Since the film’s 1999 release, Mena has worked steadily in the film business, but lately, one wonders what is going on with her personal sense of style. The hair, makeup, clothing, nails, jewelry - it’s all just so wrong. Celebitchy thinks it’s a one-third-life crisis and that the outfits, along with the nonoutfitted jaunt on the beach, are a ploy for attention. I’m thinking that perhaps she dipped into Andy Warhol’s residual stash when filming Factory Girl.

American Beauty was a fantastically over-rated movie. Except that bit with the bag in the wind. That was top.
It brings me great joy to see other people who think American Beauty is overrated.
The only thing, other than Mena, about the movie I remember is the bedroom scene. Quotes from IMDB:
Carolyn Burnham: What are you doing?
Lester Burnham: Nothing.
Carolyn Burnham: You were masturbating!
Lester Burnham: I was not.
Carolyn Burnham: Yes you were!
Lester Burnham: Oh, all right! So shoot me, I was whacking off! That’s right, I was choking the bishop, chafing the carrot, you know, saying “hi” to my monster!
Nice.
Not only was it overrated, it was an anti-American piece of crap.
Take, for example, that kid’s father, the USMC colonel. He was so over-the-top bad, you don’t think that was a shot at people who serve in the military and the US military in general? Feh.

Oh no. No you did not say that American Beauty was overrated. I refuse to believe.
So so so overrated, but the scene with Annette Bening prepping and holding a crappy open house was fantastic.
And yeah, I’ve seen the pics. But then I like ‘em small, so she’ll hold a special place in my… ummmm… somewhere.
