The very dashing Michael Fassbender has registered upon the mainstream radar in a huge way following his turn in Inglourious Basterds. This development comes, however, as no surprise to those who’ve seen him stealing the screen in 300, Hunger, and Fish Tank. Now, however, he must choose between two very high-profile roles, one in an unnecessary reboot and the other in a craptastic piece of forgettable fluff. According to FOX News, here’s the scoop:
He’s being pursued, I hear, for two different Marvel comics movies. Matthew Vaughn is said to want him for “X Men: First Class.” Fassbender would play young Magneto, the precursor for Ian McKellen’s later character . . . James McAvoy is already signed to play Young Xavier.
At the same time, Fassbender is being pursued to play the villain in “Spider Man 4,” aka “No Toby Maguire Here.”
Two different movies from Marvel, but two different studios: Fox for the first, and Columbia for the second. He can’t do both.
Either way, Fassbender can’t lose. He’s got four films coming out in 2010 alone including “Jonah Hex.” By the time he’s a supercomic villain, he’ll be a bona fide movie star.
Well, Fassbender ought to pick the Spiderman reboot, for those X-Men movies are righteously terrible. It nearly breaks my little black heart that James McAvoy has signed on for one of those, and he’d better watch out for the Hugh Jackman effect. Likewise, if Fassbender does the X-Men thing, he may one day find himself belting out overwrought ballads in the latest Baz Luhrmann epic. And we all remember how well Australia went over, right?
