One of the only summer flicks that I can’t fucking wait to watch is Public Enemies, not only because of the eye candy and talent of the leading men but also for the director, Michael Mann. This guy really knows how to helm a crime thriller — as evidenced with Heat (1995) and notwithstanding the unjustifiably gritty Miami Vice (2006). Hell, everyone is allowed one major fuckup in their career, no?
At any rate, Public Enemies premiered last night in Chicago, so I’m posting a shitload of new stills that mostly feature Johnny Depp, Christian Bale (who is still off my fucking list), and Marion Cotillard. These photos join the previous imagery of two great tastes, the crotch-rocket poster, and what can only be described as the ideal sammich.
To recap, the main players of Public Enemies are as follows: Depp as John Dillinger, the infamous American bank robber; Bale as Melvin Purvis, the FBI agent in charge of the manhunt; Cotillard (in the thankless role of “the chick”) as Billie Frechette, the (nonexistent) torch-singer girlfriend of Dillinger. Public Enemies scorches theaters on July 1.

[...] A hot new film from Se
Two man crushes in one picture, and one Mann; good lookin’ out.
And now, a moment of your time before you inevitably delete this:
As to Anonymous and my supposed attempt to “sully their reputation” – they do that perfectly well on their own. Eagerly. Nothing I said was erroneous or exaggerated. There’s an entire wiki devoted to the myriad ways that Anonymous has made the Internet a more horrible place to visit, and at any given moment you can pop over to 4chan, or one of its spin-offs, and see for yourself. They revel in the reputation of cyberspace’s callous, malicious boogeymen.
There are Anons who protest Scientology, who report animal abuse and expose Internet predators, and who now assist the struggle in Iran. Great. But there are also Anons who hack & troll webpages of people they don’t like, who spam gore, who proliferate images of animal abuse, who actively dabble in child porn – and who vehemently despise the former type of Anons who attempt to make the world a better place. Dismissing this fact as some kind of angry propaganda does not make it any less true.
If I somehow gave you the notion that I was disdainful of the current attempt at assisting the struggle in Iran, I apologize (I guess); my only real intent was to express amazement that people who were actively working toward progressive compassion would willingly cling to the alias of a group who is infamous throughout many corners of the Internet for its wanton cruelty. Hence, my comment that it would be helpful to have better ways of distinguishing the two.
Assuming, as I did – based on your indignant reaction – that you were unaware of cyberspace’s colorful history with the phrase ‘Anonymous’ … it becomes ironic that you would accuse me of having no earthly idea what I speak of. Seriously, even xkcd knows this stuff. ‘bill’ knew it too, though he may have been attacking the wrong target. I myself am unfamiliar with the inner workings of whyweprotest.net, or whether they indulge themselves in the same fashion as their lesser brethren.
And it would be nice if you didn’t arbitrarily shut down the thread in which it would be appropriate to defend myself, making me look like some kind of Scientology goon. If Pajiba closed itself off at the slightest hint of crankiness, there wouldn’t even be a website.
I apologize for making you feel as if I was labeling you a CO$ goon. I should have been clearer on that – there were, in fact, several other comments from such goons that I had to delete. Obviously, I haven’t deleted your comments (either on that post or this one), for I only delete ones that are genuinely abusive and threatening. True, this isn’t Pajiba, and they rarely close threads, but this is an entirely different site, and, when it comes to the CO$, I’d just as soon close the conversation than deal with their relentless attempts to take down my server by gang-banging a particular post with comments or endless pinging.
The defensiveness you witnessed came as a result of their nonsense (and, yes, I’ve received bona fide threats from them several times via my email). Also, much of the “bad” reputation dealt to Anonymous is based upon online attacks with mysterious origins that could have come from anywhere. Yes, it’s easy to do that to a group that is, well, anonymous, but it’s also a regular practice of the CO$ to defame and destroy their critics by any means possible, regardless of ethics or legality. Again, they won’t defend themselves against evidence of all the people who have died at their hands. It’s all about attacking and defaming the enemy.
Actually, Frechette was very real; check out what PBS’s website says about her:

Whoo boy. I’m batting about 8000 this weekend, ain’t I?
Thanks. Will check it out.
Well, they probably took enough liberties in the movie with her character that only her name is the same, so you may not be that far off!
ps. A friend of mine worked on this movie here in Chicago and in Wisconsin and said that both Johnny Depp and Christian Bale were awesome to work with and very nice to locals as well.
