In my usual Saturday night tipsy stupor, I’ve been listening to Beastie Boys albums and doing some online “research” – much to my male companion’s chagrin. What I’ve found will make Bono lovers cry, so do prepare to be astounded. It appears that those who coined the term “mullet” were the Beastie Boys:
Beastie Boys also published Grand Royal Magazine, with the first edition in 1993 featuring a cover story on Bruce Lee, artwork by George Clinton, and interviews with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and A Tribe Called Quest MC Q-Tip. The 1995 issue of the magazine contained the first print reference of the expression “mullet” to describe the hairstyle.
It should be noted that none of the Beastie Boys have actually sported a mullet. They were far too subzero to do just that, and they remain so until this very day.

nope!
i’ve specifically remember a reference in print to mel gibson’s ‘do in ‘lethal weapon 2′ as a mullet.
i believe it was a reviewer’s article in the local paper.
Was Mel Gibson’s really a mullet? I think it was just long hair. Not true mullet. Got to check out http://www.mullet.com fantastic site!
