Dig Out Your Soul, the new Oasis album the Gallagher brothers have been promising for more than a year, is due to be released in three months. It’s been a few years since the boys recorded Don’t Believe the Truth, and the music industry has gone through some significant changes. In what has to be the least newsworthy development you’ll read today, this puts Noel Gallagher’s knickers in a twist:
“There’s five different versions of the f**ker! There’s a cheap digital one, there’s a digital one that’s slightly more expensive, there’s a physical one in the shops, then there’s a deluxe one, then there’s a ’super deluxe’ one which has got everything on it. What happened to the days when you just went and said, ‘Can I buy the new Oasis album please?’”
Unfortunately, Noel understands even less about the world of digital, online entertainment than he thinks. He knew that Radiohead’s most recent album was available online on a pay-what-you-think-is-fair basis, which he called a “free marketing ploy,” but Oasis won’t be going there any time soon:
“That’s not our bag. I didn’t spend a year in the most expensive studio in England, with the most expensive producer in America and the most expensive graphic designer in London to then give it away. Fuck that.”
Pity he doesn’t know that downloading is so ubiquitous that it’s causing investors to downgrade the whole entertainment industry. Not that I’d want to be the first blogger to make an Oasis song available for free download. I’m pretty sure the Noel Gallagher approach to settling copyright-infringement disputes has very little to do with lawyers and a lot to do with the blogger carrying his teeth home in his hat.
