Ever since I read the National Review list of Top 50 Conservative Rock Songs, a certain song has played on constant rotation in my iTunes:
20. “Rock the Casbah,” by The Clash.
After 9/11, American radio stations were urged not to play this 1982 song, one of the biggest hits by a seminal punk band, because it was seen as too provocative. Meanwhile, British Forces Broadcasting Service (the radio station for British troops serving in Iraq) has said that this is one of its most requested tunes.
UPDATE: Gino has an addition:
“[D]amn you for closing comments to the ‘50 conservative songs’ thread before i could nominate the only real anti-socialism song that anybody needs to hear:
‘Holiday In Cambodia” by the Dead Kennedys.
Ehhh. Sorry about that, Gino. It just irritates the crap out of me whenever people start slinging crap in comments sections, and the host just lets it happen. As if taking sides will lessen their bloggy appeal or something – and as most of you know, I’m not at all afraid to take sides. That’ll be the death of me one day.

Sadie darlin’ you have come up with Poppa’s all timers now! The worst day in the music world was was Strummer died and the second worse was when the Clash busted up, depriving us of one of the best end-of-the-era punk bands ever.
Big Audio Dynamite didn’t cut it, and Strummer’s solo work just didn’t have the edge any more; and I consoled myself listening to The Specials and going to Jamaica to forget about our bad luck that the boys were bust.
Sigh. Those days wuz the bomb.
Hahahhahaha. You sound so hip, Daddio.
Nah – I gave up hip when Joey Ramone died. What’s the point anymore?
Wow, I’m frightened coz I thought I was the only one harbouring a Specials recording. (And if anyone busts out with the Let’s Go Bowling ’tis all over.)
“Nah – I gave up hip when Joey Ramone died. What’s the point anymore?”
YOU (sir/mAdama) are NOT A RAMONE!
“what’s the point…”
SHOOT YERSELF! RIGHT NOW!
I’m not a Ramone, this is true. But you ARE an asswipe.
Yeah. I call a foul ball. Comments are closing on this one.
I don’t allow insults to be slung upon commentors on this blog. Insult me if you desire, but I won’t host comment wars, and never mess with my friends.
