Aye. Two of my favourite bands are releasing new albums in the upcoming months, and I’ve already downloaded the first singles. If you are into has-been nineties alternative rock, they are definitely right on tap.

Garbage, which of course is fronted by diva extraordinaire Shirley Manson (nice cross between fifties kitsch and cult madness in the moniker), will soon release their fourth album. I fear it will be their last album, due to internal strife between the members. The first single Why Do You Love Me? is grittier than their former releases, but it has a live flavour, and let me just say that Shirley and the Boys are excellent on tour.

On the other hand, the new Nine Inch Nails single really isn’t so great. In fact, it’s a lot like Trent Reznor’s last few albums, which to be diplomatic, were quite boring. Yeah. We all get boring sooner or later. It appears that I’ve lost my mojo as well, so if anyone finds it, kindly return to sender. Thanks.
Update: Since I’m a generous gal at times, I gave NIN another listen. Nope…I still want to tear my fingernails out to escape the excruciating monotony;-) To give you a clue on how desperate Reznor must be for new material, the song is titled after a well-worn cliche, which was last explored by the eighties hair band, Ratt. Crikey!

Really? You thought The Fragile was boring? I love that album…
Granted, it didn’t have the unbridled angst of earlier NIN, but the compositions are really well-done, in my opinion. Complex, layered, ponderous. The kind of music in which I tend to lose myself in a dark room with a pair of headphones on.
Then again, I like the later releases by Radiohead and Tool for very similar reasons, and I know that’s not the most common thing, either…
Heh heh. I see what you mean, but the unbridled angst was what made NIN so appealing. I think I’m a lyrics kind of gal.
Now that I think about it, doesn’t it correlate with right/left brain preference as to whether one appreciates the words or melody in music?
That’s it! That is exactly why I love Leonard Cohen, and everyone else thinks I’m just insane. Except for Skippy….case in point;-)
P.S. You like Tool?!? Does dad know about this?
I’m glad to hear the new Garbage song is grittier. Still haven’t downloaded it yet. The last album was way too pop, in a bad way. But it wasn’t a complete lost since Shirley is one of my favorite female vocalists.
Not sure about the new NIN. The only thing Trent did I really loved was Pretty Hate Machine. The Downward Spiral had some great songs on it, but I thought it was a bit too metal and too much filler.
I saw Garbage live once and you’re right…they’re a really good live band. I just wish iTunes had that tune they did for the “Romeo and Juliet” movie.
Garbage: Excellent. I prefer version 1.0 to version 2.0, but both were great records and Butch Vig is one of my favorite producers period.
NIN: Unlistenable twaddle.
Your stock just went up another notch in my book, Sadie, my dear. I should have KNOWN you were a Garbage fan! They rock! You rock! We now just need to get a van that rocks… ahem… bygones!
Oh Puffy. You always do know what to say to make a girl weak in the knees;-)
“P.S. You like Tool?!? Does dad know about this?”
Hee hee. I’m going to go out on a limb and guess that dad isn’t familiar with Tool.
But yes, I love them. I think “Eulogy” is possibly one of the best songs about grieving ever made.
OK..actually, I hadn’t heard the new NIN single until just now. It’s OK, but yes, I see what you mean about the monotony. It doesn’t really develop or go anywhere interesting.
I’m still hopeful, though. The singles are rarely the most interesting songs.
Poor dad. He’s going to read these comments and think he’s so out of touch. Sheesh, I feel out of touch, and I’m just thirty.
And we all know you can’t trust a blogger who’s over thirty, right?
The new Garbage is pretty good; personally, I’m amazed they lasted long enough to put this one out. Grittier, to me, is good, so I’m glad they did, just surprised given the dynamics of that band.
Which NIN song did you hear? I don’t know the title, but there’s one they’re playing as a single on the radio that isn’t so much; boring, or pop-ish, is a good way to describe it. Michele at ASV had a track called “the line begins to blur” she was giving away a while ago, and it is pretty good, I thought. A bit bassy even for NIN, but better than the track I’ve heard on the radio.
OK, 10 points here for Garbage. Do these count double since I’m waaaay over thirty?
Now a chance to double-impress me: Pat Metheney? A little bit?
Er…no. Leonard Cohen?
