Poor Pete Doherty. The old bloke hasn’t shagged a model in quite some time, although he did put a lip lock on an Amy Winehouse lookalike the other day. Speaking of Winehouse, both she and Pete have been dropped from NME’s Cool 50 List as of this year. This is a particular tragic development when one considers that, just a few years ago, Doherty was #1 on the list, and Amy topped out at #8 last year. To make matters worse, Peter has failed to defend his two-year NME Sexiest Man title, which he co-helmed for one year with former girlfriend and Sexiest Woman Kate Moss. This year, some ruffians by the names of Noel Fielding and Kylie Minogue are the alleged Sexiest Man and Woman of them all. Bloody hell!
For his part, however, Peter must be congratulating himself at ranking #6 on a list of Most Desirable Date for British Gay Men. Since gay men tend to actually place importance upon trivial things such as personal hygiene, this sounds rather unbelievable until it is revealed that Doherty only captured 4% of the vote. Oddly enough, Amy Winehouse also ranked #6 as the Most Desired Lesbian Date.
For those who are actually interested in Doherty’s music, the wastrel has been chipping away at that rumoured solo album, which is presently being collaborated upon by Blur guitarist Graham Coxon. In addition, during one of Peter’s recent acoustic gigs, he cheered on his beloved QPR soccer team before a fellow former member of The Libertines attempted to join him onstage:
Former drummer Paul ‘Mr Razzcocks’ Dufour was also at the gig, hoping to meet with Doherty for the first time in five years. “I’d have been happy to get onstage and play a couple of songs with him,” the drummer told NME.COM afterwards. “But I couldn’t get through the crowd.” Razzcocks revealed that he wanted to meet with Doherty to talk about releasing material The Libertines recorded before signing to Rough Trade in 2001. However, Doherty left the Monarch unaware that his former bandmate was present.
After playing for just over an hour, Doherty was informed by venue staff that he had to stop because of the Monarch’s curfew. Midway through “Time For Heroes,” the clearly disgruntled singer took off his guitar and threw it into the crowd before running offstage.
FYI, Paul Dufour is the guy eating corn on the cob in the “Up The Bracket” video. (Actually, I got their drummers mixed up here, so see the comments for details.) Damn, I’m hungry.

Er, actually, Gary Powell is the guy eating corn on the cob in the UtB video, not Razzers. Mr. Razzcocks left the band before they signed to Rough Trade, and Gary joined the Libs as their drummer. He then went on to form Dirty Pretty Things with Carl after the Libs split up.
Well, that’s an embarrassing mistake. I had forgotten that they had a previous drummer, but I knew that had been the name of their drummer… at one time.
Thanx for the correction.
No problem – they do look pretty different, though!
http://sendmedeadflowers.com/uploaded_images/oldlibertines-736120.jpg – Mr. Razzcocks is the older gentleman in the hat.
The gay men I know have better taste!
Am I the only one who visits this site who has never heard a Winehouse or Doherty song? Or are they just more famous for their behavior?
Of course, I’m embarassed to admit (okay, not so much) that my musical tastes are pretty much a 180 from these two. It’s not that I left rock-n-roll (if it still exists on radio) – it’s that it left me. If I had the 30 some-odd year old album rock station, KLOL, here in Houston before it became Tejano, I wouldn’t not have turned away. I don’t have a single station in the 4th largest city in the US – with a metro population somewhere near 5+ million that has decent music. The closest I have is the “oldies” station that plays 70s,80s,90s, and current (WTF is current oldies?) that occasionally plays some Van Halen, Eagles, or Zeppelin somewhere in between the Carpenters, Lauper, and Aguilera.
I at least I still have my scratched up CDs and, yes, my country music. At least on the country stations, I can hear recent tunes from the Eagles, Robert Plant, and, ahem, Bon Jovi. When rock died, most of the acts either faded away or slowed down their music down to 3/4 time with “remastered” copies.
Every station being Tejano is the true price we pay for illegal immigration. And the not paying income taxes thing.
Ha, well….. I never listen to music on the radio. In fact, the only radio show I like is Adam Corolla, and I have to catch him on podcasts ‘cuz I’m not on the West coast.
I have always had a thing for Brit pop, and that’s why I listen to Babyshambles, The Libertines, Dirty Pretty Things, Winehouse, Oasis, Blur, Pulp, The Kills, and the list goes on. Also, I do get the occasional email that pretty much says what you just said, Slug…. so you’re definitely not the only one. However, I’d be lying just a bit if I didn’t admit that, say, if Doherty and Winehouse were just all about their music, they wouldn’t be nearly as amusing to write about.
