Never let it be said that Pete Doherty cannot demonstrate heroic capabilities if the occasion calls for them. After all, he received the NME Shockwaves “Hero of the Year” award back in February, and he shows no signs of stopping this angelic behavior (other than that recent prison nonsense). The bloke had just popped into the Leeds Festival about 4pm on Saturday when Doherty’s dodgy eyes spotted clouds of smoke “billowing” from a corner of the parking lot:
At one time, Pete would have scampered over in the hope of finding some dodgy goings-on involving a crack pipe. But rather than going to grab a light for his ciggie, he jumped into action like Spider-Man on speed and immediately called 999 on his mobile. Operators were amazed when he asked for a fire engine and not an ambulance for his druggy pals.
An hour later the blaze was under control but not until 19 cars had been damaged. But it could have been a lot worse without Pete.
An onlooker said: “It was thanks to him that the fire did not spread any further.
“I was amazed – I’ve never seen him move so fast. He’s the last person you’d expect to have such a lightning reaction to anything, unless it was illegal. But he stopped the situation from getting any worse.”
Then, after our antihero saved the day, he proceeded kill everyone slowly by blowing secondhand smoke into the crowd. In fact, once it was time for Babyshambles to take the NME stage, Pete reportedly ignored a smoking ban and lit up several consecutive ciggies onstage. Good times, mates.
