And here you thought that the memory of Kurt Cobain had been exploited in in every imaginable way. Clearly you failed to reckon with the dynamo of creativity that is the postmodern art world. (Or possibly post-postmodern; accounts differ on this point.) Australian artist Natascha Stellmach’s latest exhibition in Berlin–entitled “Set Me Free”–includes a small pile of gray powder that, according to her, is the mortal remains of the Nirvana frontman. Stellmach plans to cap the exhibition by rolling Kurt’s ashes into a spliff and smoking it at an undisclosed location in Berlin, to “release Cobain into the ether from the media circus.”
As to how she might have acquired Kurt’s ashes, which were stolen last June, Stellmach will only say, “That’s confidential and kind of magic. They came to me.” Possibly it’s time for the German police to come to her and discuss her magical technique for getting involved with something that combines the least savory aspects of burglary and grave robbery, if Stellmach’s claim is true. After that Stellmach might have to magically disappear for a while, but I think the post/post-postmodern art world will be able to stumble along without her.

I wonder if they’ll arrest her for possession of stolen goods the instant she’s taken her first hit.
I like how she wants to release him from the media circus by announcing to said circus that she has his ashes. Fuck her.
