Most of us here in the States spent the last few days exploring the risky possibilities of alcohol, illegal fireworks, and potato salad that’s been left out in the sun too long. But for some people, the first week in July wasn’t all fun and games. Rose McGowan, for example, had an absolutely sucky week. First her engagement to Robert Rodriguez, the guy who left his wife for McGowan during the making of Planet Terror, hit the skids when Rodriguez’Barbarella fantasy finally faced reality. Rodriguez wanted to remake Roger Vadim’s jeu de fromage with McGowan in the title role, but the anemic performance of Grindhouse/Planet Terror at the box office didn’t exactly bring the investors flocking to Rodriguez’ door. Now the engagement is off, and Barbarella is back on track with Jessica Alba—who worked with Rodriguez on Sin City–as the new Barbarella.
Great. Jessica Alba has never successfully carried a project, and her last three movies–Awake, The Eye, and The Love Guru–have all been serious box office disappointments. Rose McGowan has to take this as a personal slap in the face, and the odds we’ll ever see Red Sonja or Women in Chains!–directed by Robert Rodriguez! Starring Rose McGowan!!—seem pretty remote. Meanwhile, somewhere Elizabeth Avellan, the former Mrs. Rodriguez, is laughing her ass off.

Selfish little shit that I am, I have my own recommendations for the aforementioned projects. Of course, being that she’s my first ever girl-crush has nothing to do with it, but, dang…wouldn’t it be cool to see her as the next Bond girl, too?

Totally OT, and I know you don’t watch a lot of t.v., but I now have a new favorite show: Mad Men.
I didn’t watch any of the shows this season because I didn’t want to start in the middle, but On-Demand now has the entire first season.
Holy cow. You really should check it out. It is like opening a time capsule which reveals all of the biases and prejudices of the day. It’s terrific.
What can people possible be thinking remaking Barbarella? It’s easily in the top ten worst movies I have ever seen. It might be in the top five.
[...] Jessica Alba & Rose McGowen throw down [...]
What’s even more jacked up is that Rodriguez (allegedly) wants a $70 million budget for this. It just doesn’t make sense.
I wrote a half-assed review of it a few years back:

Key quote: “…I’m not sure if it was edited for AMC or what, but did not contain nearly enough nudity to justify the damage it’s done to my brain.”
Honestly I could see Rose McGowan as Red Sonja! I loved that cheesy movie…and she kinda has the same face as Bridgitte Neilsen. I can NOT see Jessica Alba as Barbarella….what a crock?? She’s never had a hit movie…so their choice seems pointless.
