Europe is about to get rickrolled, and they have no one to blame but themselves. According to a reliable source (no, hang on, let’s try that again), Rick Astley will be crowned as Best Act Ever at MTV’s European Music Awards in Liverpool on November 6. The Eighties crooner was the beneficiary of a viral internet campaign (definitely not Rick’s idea) that’s racked up close to half a billion votes so far, propelling Rick onto the short list of stars where he defeated the likes of Green Day, Britney Spears, and U2. Richard Godfrey, senior vice president of the MTV Europe Music Awards, tried to put a good face on the upset victory:
This surprise nomination truly demonstrates that the MTV Europe Music Awards is the most democratically selected Awards show there is.
Rick will get two performance slots to demonstrate his awesomeness, and if he doesn’t use one of them to perform “Never Gonna Give You Up,” he’ll be lucky to get off the stage alive. Hell, he could probably make his fans ecstatic just by performing “Never Gonna Give You Up” twice.
