Most of you probably heard about Ricky Gervais’s performance as host of this year’s Golden Globes Awards—hell, one or two of you might even have watched the event. Gervais went out of his way to insult as many guests as possible, and at least one of the guests (*koff* Robert Downey Jr. *koff*) called Gervais’s humor “hugely mean-spirited.” But ratings for the ceremony have gone up both years that Gervais played emcee, and a few hours ago he was still insisting that a repeat appearance was very much on the table. Lies, all lies. Phil Berk, head of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (which awards the Golden Globes) released a statement that more or less nuked the British comedian from orbit:
There is no truth to this rumor. We have not asked him to come back. Nice try, Ricky… Some of the things were totally unacceptable. But that’s Ricky… Any of the references to individuals is certainly not something the Hollywood Foreign Press condones.”
Actually, this matches up with morning-after reports from the event, when one anonymous HFPA member said Gervais humiliated the organization and added, “For sure any movie he makes he can forget about getting nominated.” Just on the merits, it’s fair to say that up to now Gervais hasn’t been in the slightest danger of receiving a Golden Globe. But it’s nice to get some clarification that the nomination process has a little something to do with merit and a whole lot to do with kissing ass.

Well, we’ll see what happens when the ratings go down next year, and the year after, and the year after that. Then they’ll be begging him to come back.
I hope he asks for a lot of ass kissing. Or money.

Gervais is the only reason I even know the golden globes still exists.
They can dish it out but they sure can’t take it in Hollywood can they?
At the most, his jokes made me go Ohhhhhh! but none left me offended or embarrassed for the celebrities. Only the RDj joke may have gone a little far but HEY! You telling me RDj can’t take a fucking joke?
I watched his bit and thought it was hilarious in spots, and I imagine it was probably the only thing worth watching the entire night. I think the fact that people were offended has more to do with them taking themselves far too seriously than any lack of tact on his part. Although he WAS refreshingly free of tact.
