It makes my stomach turn to defend Scientology, but your idea of shooting a fellow in the shoulder is unreasonable. Life and death situations are not like the movies. Being threatened will plumb rattle most people and you don’t always have the presence of mind/time/quickness to fire a disabling shot. Every time you discharge a firearm, you are shooting to kill. You always shoot center of mass. No one shoots the sword out of the villain’s hand except the hero of a bad b-movie.

If the swordsman was coming at the guard, then the guard was entirely justified in putting him down.

Upon further reflection, I have concluded that this guy probably didn’t intend to leave the premises alive.

Actually, this is accepted practice. If someone poses enough of a threat to use deadly force, the standard procedure is to point at center mass and continue firing until they drop. People only get intentionally shot in arms and legs in the movies.

A katana is actually quite dangerous, and if he was close enough to use it, the guard was justified.

None of this should be taken to imply that Scientologists aren’t bad, but attacking them with samurai swords probably is not a good idea.

Yeah Scientology is a weirdo cult, but if you have to shoot, shoot to kill. Leave shooting the weapon out of the bad-guy’s hand to The Lone Ranger.
