Star Trek XIII: Really Grumpy Old Men

By Mr. Atoz in George Takei, William Shatner

It’s long been known that Mr. Sulu holds his commanding officer in minimal high regard, something you could have guessed both from his autobiography and from Takei’s flame-broiled roast of Shatner on Comedy Central in 2006. But when Takei 1) neglected to invite Shatner to his recent wedding, and 2) let it be known that it was no accident at all, but a deliberate snub, Kirk decided he’d had enough and brought out the photon torpedoes in the form of a long, long video rant. Some highlights:

There is such a sickness there. It’s so patently obvious that there is a psychosis there. I don’t know what his original thing about me was. I have no idea….
I literally don’t know him. I didn’t know him very well on the series. He would come in for a day or two, as evidenced by the part he played. Then on the movies, there occasionally. I didn’t know the man….
Why would he go out of his way to denigrate me? It’s sad that the man can’t find enough peace in his life to either say ‘Be positive’ and say ‘I forgive him, whatever those hurts were’, or to shut up about it. It’s sad. I feel nothing but pity for him.”

This is impressively unhinged, even by the standards of the performer who gave us The Transformed Man. On the one hand, Shatner says repeatedly that he couldn’t even pick Takei out of a lineup, and then gets seriously beefed that this virtual stranger didn’t invite him to his wedding. Regardless, it’s sort of inspiring to see their mutual loathing has managed to survive unchanged for four decades. One can only hope George Takei’s marriage is half that durable.

I’ve met George Takei, who seems like a genuinely nice guy and a good deal less “psychotic” than some other people on that show. ;) Bill is a shameless self-promoter though, and maybe this is an attempt to get more attention. If it isn’t, it’s badly misguided.

I’ve never heard anything bad about Takei from people who have met him. However, he does seem to be holding a bit of a grudge here. And while Shatner is undeniably a jerk, he’s an awesome, larger-than-life jerk in the Hasselhoff manner. Basically, I’m not going to take sides on this one.

I agree with mr. atoz. If Shatner really despised the man and couldn’t get past whatever is between them, he would not have allowed Takei to take part in the roast. It seemed that Takei went out of his way to make it known that Shatner wouldn’t be at his wedding. Of course, the way the vote is looking right now, there won’t be any more gay weddings in California. Don’t know how that affects the ones that have already taken place. The proposition seems to be on it’s way to defeat by both Republicans and Democrats.
