No one could accuse Stephen Fry of being unskilled. Yes, he did appear on the Jeeves & Wooster television series back in the Nineties (which, as the Llamas noted the other day, was something of an abomination), but he and Hugh Laurie redeemed themselves by doing lots of other funny stuff. Also, Fry acted in a number of movies. And on the stage. He’s also written plays, nonfiction, and some exceptionally fine novels. Basically, the guy is almost offensively talented. But one skill he’s never mastered is the art of sitting through a reality TV show. Now he’s attacking the entire genre, saying that the shows “pick over the remains of life.” On the subject of the British series Dancing on Ice (which I assume is something like Dancing with the Stars—on ice!!!), he said:
I would rather skewer my own eyeballs out of their sockets with a blunt bodkin than I would watch that. I thrive on creativity, energy and excitement.
For that, Stephen, I’ll not only forgive you for Jeeves & Wooster, I’ll even overlook V for Vendetta. Regrettably, Fry’s comments on Marry Jodie Marsh were unavailable for publication.
