Sunshine.

By Bedhead in Accidental Seriousness, Hard Knock Life

Okay, so I’m going to do something that I have never done before, strictly blogspeaking, which is to compose a posting of motherly matters. Surprised? Yes, well, it happens to the best of us, and if anyone is wondering why I have turned my comments off, ’tis because I’m feeling very reflective of late and don’t need the attention as some bloggers do. Yet I digress, but it suffices to say that I do answer most emails, as long as they are framed within civility. Trackbacks will remain open for the sake of discourse.

Yesterday, I had the day free from most burdens, and what I wanted to do more than anything else was to spend the entire morning and afternoon with that little gem of mine, otherwise known as my four-year old daughter. I had my last bar review course Thursday evening, and the ex was due to pick her up early Friday evening for the weekend. The schedule was open, and for once lately, I was destressed. Midmorning, my aunt entered our wing of the house to declare that the newly-retired ex-mother-in-law had just phoned and was picking Little G up momentarily. Something about a Shriner’s event….and of course, she directed my aunt to inform me of this fact, rather than actually asking. Of course, the daughter gets excited at the mere mention of a surprise visit from grandma, so I couldn’t just crush her hopes right then. Indeed, I had been outwitted by grandma, and despite myself and knowing better, I completely burst into tears.

The little empathetic child threw her arms around my neck and comforted me while my aunt apologized for her insensitivity. She had forgotten my desperate wishes to spend a relaxing day with Little G. Unfortunately, I knew at that point, if I made issue of my intense disappointment with her grandma, then of course, I would be displaying my trademark inflexibility. It’s really best not to give ex-mother-in-laws such ammunition, so I decided to shelve the topic until a private conversation could be had. So I kissed the daughter goodbye until Sunday evening, which I hate doing, but she does need time with all of her family, and I know this. Then I sat down and felt very sorry for myself.

About ten minutes later, I heard a horn honking outside and glanced out the front windows of the house. To my surprise, my precious little girl was walking up the front path with a single rose. Upon her arrival at the doorway, she threw her arms around me and announced that she had discussed the matter with grandma, and that grandma would be picking her up again in five hours. She asked grandma to take her to get a flower for mommy, because she wanted to make mommy happy again by spending the day with me as planned.

At that point, everything suddenly became much brighter. I remain amazed.

A Softer Side

My good friend Sadie is a lot of things. In addition to being intelligent and outspoken, she is also the mother of a beautiful four-year-old daughter. Like a ray of sunshine, she has shared a rare glimpse of this other…
