The long-simmering conflict between surfers and paparazzi is about to get ugly. Or uglier, anyway. Things came to a head last Saturday when surfers told a group of paps to GTFO after the snappers basically took over the beach trying to get pics of lust-object Matthew McConaughey surfing and sunbathing. The altercation grew into a full-blown gang war that spilled over into Sunday, not to mention the pages of ultra-classy pap-site X17. The comments there give some sense of the immense ill will between the paparazzi and the locals:
More than 1,000 angry back-and-forth comments between the lensmen and the surfers have been logged, including one urging paparazzi to “rendezvous next Saturday in the same spot. 50 paps are going to meet u there. Good luck and enjoy the high waves.” A surfer responds, “Bring it on, paps. It will be the end for you on the beach. Saturday is on.”
Hollywood Elsewhere columnist Jeffrey Wells also seems to feel just a bit of rancor:
Paparazzi are pigs in the gutter — the scumbucket jackals of worldwide celebrity culture. The lowest of the low, covered in their own slime. They deserve every bad thing that happens to them except death or disfigurement or being turned into paraplegics.
More footage of the battle can be seen at TMZ. On all the sites, the comments suggest that public opinion lies solidly with the surfers on this one. That’s understandable—they’re defending their right to privacy, not to mention the honor of Matthew McConaughey. The irony here? As one of the commenters noted, “McConaughey cannot surf to save his life.”

Why do surfers always think they are tough? Did Point Break ruin it for everyone? Prepared to get bitchslapped wave fag
The sad fact is that a “reasonable expectation of privacy” does not accrue to anyone in a public place. A photographer may take a picture of you in public whether you want it to happen or not, and physically stopping him from taking it is actually assault. If they take a picture of you inside a private residence or in a privately owned area after you instruct them not to, then they are breaking the law.
Not that I’m defending them, but that’s the law.
Well, the thing is that McConaughey has always been rather giddy to greet the photogs. I’m not sure why this situation would be any different than, say, the past few summers where he has posed on his surfboard for the flashbulbs….
You know, Tom Wolfe’s book The Pump House Gang documents the Surf Nazis back in the Sixties and one of their targets was the young Racquel Welch.
Entitled rich WASPs are entitled rich WASPs whether we are talking about tennis courts or beach space. Face it, this is the only chance these hollow-chested punks have to make a splash on Facebook.
Someone should send the call out to the warring factions of LA and get them to unite against these entitled dweebs. The enemy of my enemy is my friend. Crips on line two…
“except death or disfigurement or being turned into paraplegics” WHAT?!
Someone call in the PCHers.
Why are the paps such whinny cry-babies? I’ve never seen such a group of queens get so hysterical whenever someone threatens them. One of them even has the vagina to say ,( to show he’s tough):”I like a soccer player.” How gay is that? I also noticed that the majority of the paps are foreigners….can’t we, as decent God fearing Americans, just kick their speedo wearing, limp wristed, royalty sycophantic , AK-47 shooting, terrorist hiding, fake green card asses back to whatever shithole they call a home? Are you with me, America?
