Mickey Rourke’s amazing career comeback continues to serve as an inspiring example to the likes of Amy Winehouse after the former down-and-outer picked up a BAFTA Award for Best Actor at Sunday night’s awards ceremony. What’s more, Rourke is now my personal favorite for Best Actor at the Oscars. Sure, The Wrestler is a fine film, but mostly I want to see Mickey’s acceptance speech, because his performance at BAFTA makes him a top contender for a second Oscar in the category of Best Performance at an Awards Ceremony. Rourke’s acceptance speech left the Royal Opera House littered with f-bombs. First, Mickey noted how nice it was to be back after “fucking up my career for fifteen years,” and went on to thank his publicist for telling him “where to go, what to do, when to do it, what to eat, how to dress, what to fuck.” After the presentation, Rourke capped his performance with a moving and intermittently coherent interview that included this money quote:
The armor that I wore much, the strength, the physical, the — my mentality became a weakness and I am okay with the change.”
You can see the bleeped version of Mickey’s BAFTA acceptance speech here, but let’s all hope he surpasses himself when they hand out the Oscars in two weeks. The prospect of seeing Mickey Rourke give the FCC a collective heart attack won’t be enough to make me watch the three-hour snoozefest, but it would make for some entertaining clips.
