A little background on this story: Earlier this week, Gerard Butler and Cameron Diaz were seen together at various Hollywood nightspots, and quite a few of our colleagues in the dirt-dishing business started saying that love was in the air. However, according to Butler that’s not quite true. Now, the usual way of denying a story like this is to say something like, “Cameron and I are just good friends, nothing romantic,” but that’s not how Leonidas rolls. The money quote:
“So if I take my dog out for a walk apparently I’m fucking my dog? Not true!”
A casual reader might think that Butler is: a) comparing a night on the town with Cameron to walking a dog; or, b) comparing dating Cameron to fucking a dog. Of course, a more astute reader will realize that he’s doing both. Butler might or might not have had some interest in pursuing Cameron, but if she has a shred of self respect he just foreclosed that possibility for a long, long time to come.

My respect for Gerard Butler just increased a hundredfold. That is the best celebrity quote in years.
I know people like to pick on her, but I actually think Cameron Diaz is pretty hot. Presumably Mr. Butler does also.

I nearly sprayed coffee when I read the comment, but I still think it could have been phrased in a way less insulting to Cameron. Hopefully she’s got a sense of humor.
Never really understood the Cameron hate myself. Hollywood is full of women who are less attractive and much more annoying.

Part of this story was left out by the razzi. Earlier that week, Gerard was photographed walking his dog with a different woman in LA, so the razzi reported that he was dating her (actress Laura Harring). Then when Gerard and Cameron were seen at a restaurant a few days later, all the rumors about he and Cameron being hot and heavy hit the rags; thus his reference to walking his dog. He was NOT comparing any woman to his dog. He was bluntly letting the razzi know that they are full of BS.
Whatever the backstory, it is a hilarious quote, and he obviously isn’t calling his girlfriend (or woman friend, or special friend, or whatever she is) a dog. But it’s because of that context, that it could be taken that way, that it is so freaking hilarious.
I hope she isn’t offended by it, because it really is a great line. From everything I’ve read she has a great sense of humor so I think he should be ok.
