these are the times that try men’s souls

“These are the times that try men’s souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country; but he that stands it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman.” - Thomas Paine

Memorial Day sees itself as the most convoluted of American holidays. Most folks around these parts will spend the day grilling the party burgers at a lakeside barbeque. How bizarre to celebrate their own superiority at the grill, along with toasting their own skin in the uberbright sunshine. These are the idiots who never stop to thank those who gave and continue to give their lives for our freedom and liberty because “War is bad, m’kay?” Fucking hypocritical reprobates.

“When you see a rattlesnake poised to strike, you do not wait until he has struck before you crush him.” - Franklin D. Roosevelt

My plans today include visiting the cemetary (a novel concept on Memorial Day), avoiding the harsh glare of the sun on my fair (read = pale) skin, and perhaps afterwards getting some geek-oriented work accomplished in (precious) solitude. Tomorrow, the celebrity gossip will commence once again.

UPDATE: See also Seven Inches Of Sense, Cathouse Chat, Chasing Vincenzo, and of course, MY VRWC for their Memorial Day thoughts.

i like your idea of how to spend today, though.

Shrugs, BluMemorial Day, 2006…

Today is Memorial Day. Today, we remember the brave and honorable men and women who sacrificed so much to keep our country safe and free. How can we even begin to properly honor their memory, or to say a true…

Heh - if the Americans were serious about remembering their heros on memorial day rather than having a BBQ, then they’d do what the British did and place memorial day in pissy November.

Try and enjoy the sunshine then! (Unless you live in the South…)

Oh many people don’t consider Oklahoma to be part of the South in a traditional sense, since I guess they think we still live in teepees or some such nonsense.

Yet I assure you that it was quite warm, into the low 90’s. England isn’t sounding so bad right now.

Hold it Sadie! That post is fighting words where I come from. Down here in Roswell (GA not NM) we make a point to hold remembrance ceremonies. After all, we’re home to the 48th Brigade among others. My own town has perhaps the biggest ceremony in the state. The barbecue plates for sale afterwards help, as does the local band known for every Southern Rock song out there. I agree that Memorial Day is more than a holiday, so i go.
