ComingSoon.net seems to think that this is the first look at Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter in Tim Burton’s upcoming Alice in Wonderland. It looks a lot more like a fan-made hoax by a two-bit hack who tried really hard to use the Photoshop “clone” tool in the background but, as a result of improper application, ended up with a blurry fucking mess. Then, we have the alleged costume itself, which looks like Jack Sparrow’s headband atop Carrot Top’s hair, Willy Wonka’s sense of style, and an overweight drag queen wearing Edward Scissorhand’s makeup. Coming Soon’s reader response has been mixed between the typical fanboy fawnings and the more honest comments like this one: “He looks like Sigorney Weaver in the first Ghost Busters after she gets possessed….and then she took testosterone pills…. That is messed up.” Yeah, it’s more than messed up, alright. It’s gotta be fake, and the jackass who made it probably torrent-ripped their copy of Photoshop. So there.

After looking forward to Burton’s remake of Willy Wonka for far too long to end up VERY disappointed I’ll be taking this as advance warning to give it a miss.

I am afraid this looks all too real to me. I love Tim Burton’s design, his sense of the spooky and his influence on the culture. But his films qua films? Not so much.
The open call acting blog I’m subscribed to DID mention that Johnny is expected to play the Mad Hatter in Tim Burton’s rendition of Alice in Wonderland and guess who’s supposed to be playing the Red Queen? Helena Bonham Carter. Alice is–from what I read–a little known, young actress from Australia.
