Five months into the belly of the beast, 2011 is shaping up as the year that will go down in history as “that long boring space between late 2010 and early 2012.” But there’s one thing nobody can take way from us: November 11, 2011, will feature a run of one’s longer than anything we’ll see for… I don’t know. Decades. Millennia, maybe. What am I, some kind of math guy? At any rate, certain fans with an unwholesome interest in Spinal Tap are agitating to have the day recognized as International Nigel Tufnel Appreciation Day (inspired by this scene, which you’ve seen already but go ahead and watch it again). This is a bit problematic, since large chunks of the world will be celebrating November 11 as Veterans’ Day, Armistice Day, or Remembrance Day, but you know how it is. These kooky kids and their short-term historical memory.
The campaign to observe Nigel Tufnel Day has been around for a while, but it’s beginning to pick up steam. You can catch the excitement on Facebook, or sign up for the Twitter feed to follow developments moment by moment. Or you could, I don’t know, get a life. Just remember: There’s a fine, fine line between clever and stupid.
