Tim Kring Is Terribly Disappointed in You

By Mr. Atoz in Television

At the end of its first season, Heroes looked like a pretty hot property, but over the last two seasons the show has gotten as cold and unappetizing as day-old pizza. Lots of possible reasons for the show’s decline (and if we listed them, this might be the longest post in the history of Agent Bedhead), but one thing is certain–it’s not Tim Kring’s fault. In fact, the series creator has responded to the whole debacle in a less than heroic manner. First, he kicked two of his top producers over the side, even though they had the backgrounds to compensate for Kring’s obvious weaknesses when writing about superheroes. Now, he’s saying that the fault lies with the medium, not the message (scroll down the page). Or possibly with the fans, whom he calls “saps and dipshits.” (The link says [expletives], but trust me–the man said “dipshits.”) Here’s the quote:

Serialized dramas work only if people sit in front of their TV sets on the night and at the hour the network broadcasts each episode. But now, you can watch a serialized drama whenever and wherever you want and almost all of those other means of watching episodes “are superior to watching it on the air.” Sooooo, the only people watching a show — “Heroes” perhaps — at the time it’s being broadcast by a network — say NBC — are the “saps and [expletives] who can’t figure out how to watch it in a superior way.”

Heroes is down to half the audience it had at the beginning of Season One, so neither the show nor its creator are likely to be around to annoy us much longer. Of course, if that happens, it will only prove that you were viewing the series in some inferior way that prevented you from appreciating the awesomeness Kring was pouring into his creation. You dipshits.

Good thing I got me one of those superior ways to watch, otherwise I would feel like such a dipshit.

Oh wait, I still haven’t watched it, mostly because I feel no real draw to it. Because from what little I have seen, this season is boring as hell, mostly for the reasons you linked to.

I like watching TV shows on my actual TV. I like the larger screen and the comfort of my bed.

I have just never watched “Heroes” because it looks like complete horseshit.

I believe I commented at the conclusion of Season 1 that they needed a character on the show whose special power was that he was not a fucking moron.

I don’t think I bothered with it after that.

I really wonder how much of that first season’s success was due to the jailbait in the cheerleader outfit. They certainly did get a lot of mileage out of that (save the cheerleader, save the world, remember?)

I know how to watch shows other than on TV, but if it’s scheduled and I’m home, I watch it on the TV. I don’t want to be DL’ing gigs and gigs on a daily basis on my cheapest broadband plan :P

The TV version of Heroes has been very confusing this season, hopping back and forth between the past, present, and future like Lost — who, not surprisingly, “lost” even more viewers once they started jumping back and forth between the past, present, and future.

And speaking of jumping back and forth: Sylar is evil, then sweet, then angsty. And even the parents “jump” around: “Oh your parents are really your parents, someone else is your parent”. WTH?

And I miss the little boy, I think his name was Micah. They played up one show with him adjusting to his doppleganger-mom, then no more Micah. And I liked Micah’s aunt too.

My husband quit watching it a few shows into season 2, and we both loved it last season.

Superior ways to watch what?….sounds like he wants everyone to be brainwashed to believe that the show is actually good…I haven’t even seen the first season even though people said it was good. And now look how the show has devolved. Superpowers are cool and all and I love the X-men. But most TV and movies done about superpowers seem mediocre. EXCEPT of course Iron Man. RDJ is the shit!
