Robert Redford’s new film Lions for Lambs opened today, and the reviews aren’t good. What’s worse, Redford seems to be trying to walk away from this trainwreck and his deranged co-star in an inconspicuous but rapid manner. Case in point: When Tom Cruise was honored by the American Museum of the Moving Image, neither Redford nor Meryl Streep, the movie’s third big name, bothered to show up. When asked why, the usual anonymous source said, “Meryl and Bob can’t stand Tom. In London, Tom kept trying to push himself into interviews. Bob said, ‘No.’ Tom wouldn’t listen. Meryl has done almost nothing for the movie. She wants nothing to do with him.”
This does not bode well. Tom is reportedly extremely worried about the box office prospects of Lions for Lambs. The film is tracking worse with audiences than any Tom Cruise film since Endless Love, and the future of Tom’s United Artists studio label is riding on its success. Of course, all hope is not yet lost. Tom still has that crowd-pleaser Valkyrie to look forward to, where he plays a likeable Nazi who tries to assassinate Hitler. (SPOILER ALERT: He fails.) Yeah, Xenu is taking this career in exciting directions.
UPDATE FROM AB: RanyIt Richildis is all over this one. Check out her merciless review of Lions For Lambs. Tommy, go back to action films where you barely speak!

OMG, it’s almost like people don’t want to pay to watch movies that tell us that we are completely fucked. We get this “narrative” about the war from the media every day, we don’t need to pay money to be subjected to it in the theater as well.
I would rather have my teeth drilled than watch this movie.
What jvon said.
Why don’t they just call each one of these movies “Limousine Liberals Tell Us What to Think in Tedious, Ham-Fisted Fashion.” It would save some time.

I just read a description of the plot on Wikipedia, and it’s even worse than I thought. One of the subplots involves a group of idealistic college students who go to Afghanistan and (I hope I’m not giving anything away here) get killed in a pointless military operation.
You’d think we were getting our asses kicked in Afghanistan based on that plot description. You might think that from reading the newspapers, also. Unfortunately, it’s not even close to the truth. Any time we engage the enemy, we slaughter them. True in Iraq as well.
Maybe someone can make a movie about how these cowards hide in villages among civilians, and dress like them in violation of international law? But I won’t hold my breath for that one. Instead we’ll get more US-bashing nonsense like this, as Hollywood types express their liberal guilt by trashing their own country. Unfortunately, they do it from their beach homes in Malibu while other people do the dying for them — and the rest of us pick up the bill from a war that keeps dragging out because the enemy believes it will win if it can wait us out. Movies like this just encourage that belief.
It’s garbage, artistically speaking, but it’s also deeply offensive. Can you imagine something like this being made during WWII? I can’t think of any way this movie would be any different if it was bankrolled by Al Jazeera instead of United Artists. Sickening.
I would not pay a dime to see this movie, I wouldn’t even go if they wanted to pay for my review. Tom needs to realize, he is on his way out, if he’s not out already. He can go jump on Oprah’s couch about that!
I don’t think he’s done at all, but he’s not A-list material anymore. A few more bombs and that message should be clear. I am somewhat interested in the story contained in “Valkyrie” (or whatever they’re calling it this week) but I doubt I’ll be able to stomach his mangling of the role.
