To a Joe Sixpack, gaijin barbarian like myself, Japanese culture can sometimes resemble a Zen koan where every conceivable answer will earn you a whack in the testicles. And apparently that’s precisely the case. As you can see from this little guidebook on Japanese smoking etiquette from the Japan Tobacco Institute, the explanation of the Japanese social code can be even more opaquely confusing than the code itself.
